Beloved Penguin, ST Math

JiJi

Beloved Penguin, ST Math

JiJi oversees student success and is responsible for crossing the screen as math puzzles are solved. JiJi is an accomplished world traveler, and has led over two million students to the next challenge as they play ST Math. JiJi is not great at jumping, but excels at waddling around classrooms in pursuit of giving students and educators alike a high “flipper”. JiJi is currently studying all mathematical subjects in grades PreK-8.

Andrew Coulson

Chief Data Science Officer

Andrew Coulson leads a team of data analysts to conduct evaluations of student and teacher usage and outcomes of ST Math. Previously, he led MIND’s education division for 12 years. There, he helped to execute strategies to scale the organization’s reach to over one million students. Previously, Coulson was the first education program officer for a major Orange County foundation. He also worked for 17 years in upper management in high-tech manufacturing engineering, acquiring experience in operations, process engineering, product reliability, and technology transfer. Coulson earned a Bachelor of Science and holds a master’s degree in physics from UCLA.

Brett Woudenberg

Chief Executive Officer

Brett Woudenberg is a veteran entrepreneur of the education technology industry. Prior to his leadership at MIND, he served in various C-level roles for a top publisher and several high growth education technology companies in K-12 and higher education. Woudenberg holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance, and received an MBA from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management.

Dorene Uhrich

Dorene Uhrich

Vice President, Education Success

Dorene Uhrich leads the professional development team, a large field team of education success managers, a team of regional implementation managers, the support team and several project managers at MIND. Her team inspires and measures the best in-class experience for the organization’s education partners. Previously, Dorene was the Director of Customer Success at Imagine Learning and also spent eight years at MIND in various roles that supported both customer and colleague success. She holds an M.Ed in education and human resource studies with a specialization in adult education and training from Colorado State University, and a teaching credential and bachelor’s in liberal studies from California State University, Long Beach.

Elizabeth Neiman

Elizabeth Neiman

Vice President, Engagement

Liz Neiman manages the marketing plans and activities that promote and enhance MIND’s initiatives. Previously, she was Senior Director of Communications and Public Relations at American National Standards Institute (ANSI), a national nonprofit focused on the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system. Her foundation and grant work included collaborating with leaders at the Gates Foundation, Lumina Foundation and the Business Roundtable. Neiman holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Psychology from The Johns Hopkins University.

Senior Vice President, Partnerships

Jim Kirchner is responsible for leading a nationwide team of Education Partnerships Managers in expanding the reach of ST Math to school districts across the country. He has over twenty years of experience in the education technology industry and has been founder and CEO of several companies, as well as the Senior Vice President of Sales at Amplify. Kirchner provides experience and expertise in business development, market development, product development, managing profit and loss, and acquisitions with both public and private companies. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business and Managerial Economics from North Carolina State University.

Jo Garrett oversees finance, accounting, human resources, and legal activities. Prior to joining MIND, she was CFO/COO and an independent consultant in the media and entertainment industry. In addition to being co-owner of an established Orange County franchise, Garrett has also acted as CEO, COO and CFO for various companies in the digital media, entertainment, licensing and merchandising, wholesale distribution, and e-commerce industries. She holds an MBA from Harvard Business School as well as bachelor’s in government from Harvard University.

Karin Wu leads a national team in the development of partnerships with corporations, foundations and individual donors, as well as nonprofit organizations that help build the STEM workforce pipeline and invest in the advancement of education innovation. Prior to joining MIND in 2015, Karin spent more than 20 years leading marketing, design, education and business development functions at Inspire Youth Project, the Art Institutes, Edmark/Riverdeep Interactive and Nintendo.  She holds a Master of Arts in education leadership from Argosy University, a bachelor’s in international business administration from St. Mary’s University, and an associate’s in applied arts from The Art Institute of Seattle.

Kevin Hammer

Kevin Hammer

Vice President, Engineering and IT

Kevin Hammer makes high-level design choices, dictates technical standards, and leads all procedures and processes for the engineering team on new technology platforms. He has been with MIND since 2014, and has been developing web applications since 1997. Previously, he was CTO for a social media start-up called mEgo, leading the launch of its social networking application. He also owned and managed a web development agency that produced online financial dashboards for companies like American Express, promotional web games for Warner Brothers and Sony, and CMS implementations for non-profits like the Museum of Natural History in Los Angeles.

Matthew Feldmann

Matthew Feldmann

Vice President, Product

Matthew Feldmann is responsible for developing a high-performing team of product managers, designers, and content specialists that define the future of ST Math. Prior to this position, he led cross-functional content creation teams at MIND to expand ST Math to 6th Grade, build the ST Math Common Core edition, and launch ST Math: Middle School Supplement. Previously, he worked at a biotechnology company where he designed the architecture and integration strategy for key enterprise planning systems. Feldmann earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Purdue University and holds a master’s degree in mathematical behavioral science from UC Irvine.

Dr. Matthew Peterson created ST Math, which serves more than one million students, creating learning environments that can yield the next generation of STEM leaders. Peterson is a regular speaker at national and international math and education conferences. After completing his undergraduate degrees in biology, electrical engineering, and Chinese language and literature from University of California, Irvine, Peterson completed a doctorate in visual neuroscience from the University of California, Berkeley.

Twana Young

Vice President, Curriculum and Instruction

Twana Young leads the overall vision, strategy, and execution for curriculum materials, resources, and professional learning across MIND’s suite of products. She has been with MIND since 2014 and previously held roles focused on instructional and professional development. Young also holds a leadership role in MIND’s co-design group, MEND – Math Equity in Design. She brings over 20 years of experience in education, including multiple district administrator roles with Columbus City Schools. Young holds a Master of Education Administration from Ashland University and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Nicholls State University.

John Phelan was with the Capital Group Companies, Inc. from 1992-2016, during which time he held several key positions, including Executive Vice President of Capital Research and Management. Previously, he was an associate partner with Andersen Consulting, where he specialized in investment management and banking. Phelan holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Management from Northwestern University. He has served on the board of directors since 2008.

Dr. Bodner is one of MIND’s co-founders. He is an adjunct professor of mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh and visiting professor at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at the East China Normal University. He formerly held faculty appointments at Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Neurosurgery and joint faculty appointments at UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute and UC Irvine’s Department of Physics. Bodner received his Ph.D. and Master’s degrees in theoretical high-energy and mathematical physics from UCLA, and his Bachelor of Science in physics and chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. He has served on the board of directors since 1998.

Chuck Amos is Chief Executive Officer at GuideK12, the only geovisual analytics company serving the education market. For many years, Chuck has been an independent consultant with educational technology companies globally. Prior to consulting, he served as the CEO of Atomic Learning where, under his leadership, the company grew to become the world’s leading provider of web-based software training serving schools globally. Before joining Atomic Learning, Amos worked as the Central US education regional manager for Apple Computer. Amos holds a bachelor of science degree in business with an emphasis in finance from the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management.

Jaime Casap served as the Chief Education Evangelist at Google for more than 14 years and was the second member of the Google for Education team. Now, Jaime is partnering and collaborating with higher education institutions, school systems, and businesses around the world, helping them build transformational policies and practices to elevate education and bring equity, diversity, and inclusion into their policies and practices. He speaks on education, technology, innovation, and generation z at events around the world.

Dr. Terry Crane is a business leader and educational consultant who works with corporations and institutions that are seeking to move through the 21st century with real solutions for challenging educational issues. Previously, she served as Vice President for Education and Family Products at AOL, President of Jostens Learning Corporation, and Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Strategic Marketing, among other roles. Dr. Crane has a doctoral degree in educational leadership and a master’s in early childhood education from the University of North Texas. She earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Texas at Austin.

Mary de Wysocki leads the Corporate Affairs Strategy and Global Problem Solving Initiative team at Cisco Systems, Inc., developing programs and partnerships that create opportunities for people to innovate and succeed in the digital economy. Previously, she led the development of Cisco’s Internet Business Solutions Group’s Innovations Practice. She has been integral to a variety of corporate social responsibility and education initiatives at Cisco for over ten years. De Wysocki holds a Bachelor of Arts in government from Wheaton College and a Juris Doctor degree from Pace University School of Law. She joined the board of directors in 2017.

Fuller is an accomplished author and has served on numerous advisory boards that focus on educational and corporate social responsibility activities. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Boston University and is a graduate of Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program. Fuller has served on MIND’s board of directors since 2013.

Donald Garcia is founder, owner, and president of Pinnacle Consulting Group, a financial planning firm located in southern California. Previously, he was among the top investment advisors for John Hancock. He has been recognized by the Million Dollar Roundtable, a trade organization for financial professionals, and has served as president of the National Association of Professional Insurance and Financial Advisors of Orange County. Garcia earned his Bachelor of Arts in speech communication at California State University, Long Beach. He has served on the board of directors since 2014.

Lawrence Higby held a variety of positions with Apria Healthcare Group, Inc., including President and Chief Operating Officer. He eventually served as Chief Executive Officer until 2008, when he stepped down to serve as the company’s vice-chair and advisor until his retirement. Prior to joining Apria, Higby served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Unocal’s 76 Product Company and group Vice President of Unocal Corporation. Higby holds a Bachelor of Science in political science from University of California, Los Angeles, where he also attended the graduate school of business. He has served on the board of directors since 2009.

David Horowitz is the Chairman of Horowitz Group. The Horowitz Family owned and operated Standard Concrete from 1949 until 1990. David Horowitz was its CEO and controlling member for 17 of those years. Today, Horowitz Group is a single family investment office based in Orange County, California. The family office invests opportunistically in private equity and real estate, and was an early capital provider to multi-unit brands, such as Lemonade Restaurant Group, Sprouts Farmers Market, and MiniLuxe, Inc. Horowitz earned a Bachelor of Arts from Pomona College in Claremont, California. He has served on the board of directors since 2004.

Previously, House was Assistant General Counsel and Assistant Secretary at Harley-Davidson, Inc. She earned her law degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a bachelor’s in political science and philosophy from University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Claudia Kreisle is the Manager of Social Impact for Phillips 66, where she is responsible for the organization’s community-focused outreach-managing initiatives, content, partnerships, and the budgeting required to make a substantial philanthropic impact on communities. Previously, she worked at Baylor College of Medicine as Director of Development after starting her career in both the communications and political arenas. Kreisle earned a Bachelor of Arts in human and organizational development from Vanderbilt University and a Master of Business Administration at Southern Methodist University, where she focused on marketing and strategic leadership. She joined the board of directors in 2017.

James McCluney joined Emulex in November 2003 as President and COO, and then in 2006 as CEO and Executive Chairman of the Board until 2013. During his tenure at Emulex, McCluney was instrumental in formulating a strategy for growth and diversification, executing on several acquisitions which positioned Emulex for entry into new market segments. McCluney holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. He has served on the board of directors since 2008.

Cameron White, Partner at NewSchools Venture Fund, invests in learning solutions that empower Black, Latino, and low-income students. He has over ten years of experience in racial and socioeconomic equity, student learning, and technology development. White has supported more than 100 early stage education technology ventures, through philanthropic capital as well as strategic feedback and guidance related to equitable student impact, research-based product design, fundraising, and sustainable growth. He began his career at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in Washington, DC, helping to align out-of-school time offerings with the school’s academic and social missions. White received a Master of Arts in Instructional Technology and Media from Teachers College of Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Princeton University.
